In 1981, the Executive Council of the Island Territory of Curacao created a commission and set up a contest in which the population was asked to design a flag for Curacao. A total of 1782 designs for a flag were submitted of which the committee selected 10 people to present their design for the flag committee and the Executive Council. Eventually, the current flag of Curacao became the winner.

The first Flag Day on Curacao was celebrated on July 2, 1984. The meaning of the colors and symbols of the flag stand for what the people of Curacao are proud of. The blue symbolizes the loyalty of the people, the upper half represents the blue sky and the lower half the sea surrounding the island.
